Profile - Major Attractions
Recreation is an important part of life in the R.M. of St. Andrews. There is an arena in South St. Andrews, a curling rink in Petersfield and several community centres throughout.
There are many organized leagues and tournaments for residents and traveling teams as well. Events and classes of all types are always taking place throughout the municipality.
For winter enjoyment, the Red River provides a place to snowmobile, cross-country ski, snowshoe and ice fish.
There are cottage areas located along Netley Creek and Wavey Creek, the Red River and Lake Winnipeg. These are all popular vacation retreats for many residents of the community and the nearby cities. As always, the Red River promises some fine fishing spots whether from shore or a well-outfitted boat as well as some great camping.
Lockport is known for great walleye fishing, and parts of the River are world famous for its monster sizes channel catfish, many reaching world record sizes. The municipality's biggest tourist attraction is the Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site. This unique facility is an original fort, and is a working model complete with several fur-trade era buildings and shops. A highlight of the museum is a functional blacksmith shop, where supplies for the fort are still produced.
Come down and take a tour of our municipality and you can see for yourself what it's all about.
